My TIS-3 "story"... We used one quite a bit while on Guam (relaying
MARS traffic); then a couple years in VA. While in VA - we belonged to a
group that was running LSB on a couple of frequencies - and had another
"group" that decided they were going to "run us off". So to prove a
point - (and tie up the frequency for some considerable time) we ran 24+
hours (continuous) LSB FSK on channel 21 (11 meters - yes CB - this
was 1976 - and there was a very active CB club in Tidewater Virginia).
Not being able to talk around / through that - they gave up - and left
us alone. Of course - someone belly-ached to the FCC - who called me to
see what was going on (we did ID every-so-often). I explained what was
going on -(and played them some tapes we'd made of the harassment of the
frequency by the "others"). Also noted that it was really just plain
lower sideband - fed by audio - which just happened to be coming from
the output of a TIS-3. They noted it'd be best if we didn't tie the band
up for quite so long at a stretch- and also wondered what on earth we
were sending - at the time I had a fair collection of RTTY art on tape -
and being it was Christmas time - had sent Santa with his reindeer; a
huge christmas tree, and so on. The FCC guy noted he wasn't too sure
about RTTY on 11 meters - even if AFSK - but we never heard from him
again... The TIS-3 was also handy to "record" TTY to cassette...
though (almost) all of the cassettes are now not playable (oxide is
flaking off!). What's ironic, though - is that what few paper tapes we
still have - appear quite ready to go. "Modern" technology, indeed.

Sold the TIS-3 to one of the club members at Ft. Eutis. I lost track of
him sometime in the late 80's - but last I heard - it was still doing a
fine job (as was the Klienschimdt TT-117 printer and TT-179 typing
reperf that went with it).

Those were fun days...

On a personal note - yes, I've re-subscribed, after some prodding by
(primarily) George Hutchison - and several others. There's lot's of good
stuff here - and I'll try to keep my contribution here "good stuff" as
well. And I'd still like to find a 28 "in range"... and this is the best
place to look...

best regards...
