Is that kerosene or Karo syrup? It's well known that extremely
sweet solutions (honey, etc.) are natural antibiotics. The growth
of bacteria is inhibited in such solutions.

Kerosene and coal oil were favorite cures here in the south (what
they cured, I have no idea!), as well as turpentine among the less
financially well-off. I also remember seeing classmates with a ball
of cotton hanging out of their ear which had been liberally doused
in "sweet oil" or "witch hazel", whatever those are.
