Bit in the butt by the lowest bidder!!

I cannot imagine a TTY machine part melting but it did. The platten in the
74A just turned into goo and melted all over the inside of the machine. At
first I thought it was some kind of capacitor bleeding.

It was the platten! All that was left was the round metal rod that had been
coated by this once solid, now gooey, mess.

I cleaned up the mess with laquer thinner. Made a new platten by putting a
heavy duty shrink tube on the former platten rod...normally shrink used to
seal coax cable connections on a tower installation....and it works
perfectly.

Next, a decent ribbon and she should be up and running. It has an awesome
spinning drum with all the letters/figures on it....an incredible device.

Now I feel better :>)
