I used Ancestry.com to trace a Confederate military relative
of mine to see what I could find out. It was AMAZING the
number of battles he was in and survived! I have all the letters
my dad wrote home from Italy during WWII. He was with
the 10th mountain division, and saw some action. He describes
being in a foxhole and hearing the Germans walking right past
him and his buddy at night! They packed in supplies on donkeys
at one point and saved a group of soldiers who had been cut off
from the main body of troops. Some general made a comment
about the soldiers in white who had saved the day! My dad's unit
wore white snow suits. They trained in Leadville, CO (not on the
map anymore). I still have a "scenic calendar" from Leadville
around here somewhere. We had no males in the family of age to
have fought in Korea or Vietnam, and likewise now with Iraq.
We're all either too old or too young!
