"550 Error: 554 Your message was sent in HTML. Send plain text only"

That error message is pretty clear. HTML has never been approved, or
even proposed as a valid format for email messages. There is a MIME type
for it, but only as an attachment, not as the body of the message.

It appears the AOL has decided to join Microsoft and a few other
companies in ignoring the official standards and doing their own thing
in email. Of course this opens to door to SPAM, trojans, worms and a
host of malicious infections, but why should they care. It gives them
some additional eye candy they can use to sell their services and they
can insert web bugs and other tracking tools to find out what their
users are up to. More and more servers are finally being configured to
reject it out of hand. Hopefully that practice will spread enough to
reverse the current trends, but I am not hopeful it will happen soon.

My recommendation is to find another ISP or at least a different mail
service. You can complain to AOL and explain why you are leaving, but
don't expect a reasonable answer from them. They have already decided to
ignore facts in the matter.
