[GreenKeys] Teletypes!

Hi Gideon:

That's an interesting question. In the 1960s I used a model 33ASR that had a
telephone modem on the right panel for accessing dial up time sharing
computers. I'm sure a pair of these could talk to each other (maybe after
fiddling with the settings). Also see:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Telegraphy#Telex

Back in the 1970s big companies would have a phone number and a TELEX number.
To have a TELEX machine was expensive since it needed a leased line. By the
1980 the TELEX gave way to phone line based TWX. I worked for a company in
Sunnyvale, Calif. area code (408) and we had a TWX machine. About that time a
popular movie was "War Games" where a boy's computer dials every number in the
(408) area code looking for computers (which look like TWX machines).

Our secretary told me she would get funny messages about playing games. Since
I had seen the movie told her to let me know immediately if that happened
again. When the caller was on line I dictated this message to her:
Would you like to play a game of:
1) tic-tac-toe
2) checkers
3) chess
4) Global Thermonuclear War

But what I haven't seen is a computer-internet interface that would look at the
Subject line of email and for example feed all those with exactly [GreenKeys]
to the Teletype. And of course allow you to compose a message and send it back
to: greenkeys at mailman.qth.net

Have Fun,
