Well, here is how I did it. If I was going to make a picture of
something I could get a photo of, I would use a photocopier to size the
picture to the size that I wanted the the final picture to be, and make
2 copies. Then I would tape one copy of the picture to a roll of
teletype paper. Then I would type over the picture with a good guess of
what characters I wanted for the picture while cutting a paper tape.
Then I would print a copy from the paper tape, and when it was completed
compare that to the second copy of the original photo. As there would
ALWAYS be changes that I wanted, the next step was the longest. I would
play the first pass of paper tape, while cutting a second generation
tape. When there are changes to make, I would stop the TD, and type the
changes. Repeat as needed until it's perfect.
If I did not have a picture to start with, I would draw one on the paper
roll and then type over it as above.
As I did a lot of pictures this way, I modified a model 19 TD (I think
it was) to make it a little easier. What I did was add two momentary
push button switches. One would advance the TD one character and "play'
that character to the current loop. The second would advance one
character but NOT interrupt the current loop. I got really good at
reading a paper tape too!
