I worked at the control location of WBR70. Miami International Flight
Service Station. (FAA) We also had an hf voice communications freq, 6568
both AM and SSB.
The actual transmitter site was a few miles SW of the Tamiami Airport (TMB).
The receiving antennas for WBR70 were two huge log periodic antennas
actually on the airport property located between the two parallel runways.
They were aimed at Tegucigalpa and at Swan Island and we relayed all the wx
info received there onto domestic tty circuits and AFTN. At the transmitter
site there was a plethora of wire. Sturba curtains, rhombics etc. When I
started work there, the transmitters were TMC, but were upgraded to
Racal/Milgo in the 1970's. I've still got a dud 4CX10,000J as a doorstop in
my shack. I was not involved in operating or maintenance of the site, but
being a ham, and friendly with the techs, I got lots of opportunities to
check it all out.
