GE, all,
sri for the delay for replying to the query about the wall mount 28's.
The Navy sure did use them,
We had them at all of my duty stations, and they all performed well.
They were somewhat of a
bear to work on, because of the configuration due to the 3 high units in
a rather small
space, but they rarely gave problems. and I sure am glad I never was in
the position to have to move any of them
because they literally weighed a ton.
The benefit of having them was the space saved, and the fact that one
could have 3 circuits
in minimum space without having to have 3 machines. Ours were wired
thru a patch panel
so one could use a reperf to act as a standalone tape punch, and also to
have all the bennies
of a full up 28 ASR with the K/KT/T selector simply by making the
appropriate patches
on the board. It was also convenient for the ability to stand up and
type on the keyboard.
I sure wish I could have gotten one from the warehouse, but the units
were real
boatanchors, being large and heavy, and moving them would have been
problematic
not to mention backbreaking, especially for someone like me with
multiple spinal
surgeries...
This being said, the USN swore by them, and I enjoyed both using and
repairing
same, although they were very robust and gave very little trouble other than
requiring the usual preventative maintenance and the swapping out of the
typing
units because the ones I dealt with got extensive use...
Hope this helps with the info.... if you need any more info, let me
know, I am
very familiar with this particular animal..
