I know Illinois Bell did not try to sell any customers on them.   
While they saved space, being attached to a wall often resulted in  
the wall becoming a "sounding board" for the machine.
We maintained over 600 machines in the Chicago suburbs and I never  
saw one.  My comment on noise was told to me by one of our  
technicians who worked on one at a government installation.
