At some point I will get the details right. Don is absolutely correct it is
an AN/UGC-74 not a TT-74.

Duncan,

To answer your questions... Boehm and National Cash Register both built
Kleinschmidt (KL) design machines. The US government paid for and owned the
designs. Kleinschmidt built the bulk of the machines including the tt4s and
tt76s.

The government procurement rules changed in the late 1960s and Kleinschmidt
won the design contract early in the 1960s for the AN/UGC-74 but did not win
the manufacturing contract. As 95% of KL business was US military it was the
beginning of the end for teleprinters from then SCM Kleinschmidt Division.

The company still exists as an Electronic Data Interchange provider to
corporate America in the same location in Deerfield, Illinois and is
privately held by the last general manager who bought it from Hansen. Hansen
is a British conglomerate who Bought SCM around 1980 and reorganized the
company. The EDI business is an outgrowth of a small railcar tracking
business KL had. The only KL family connection is now just the name on the
building.

The motors are made by Bodine Electric. They are still in business at the
same location in Chicago. A family owned business.

Duncan,

Tom was writing that the TT-74 was not made by Kleinschmidt. Methinks
he means UGC-74...

He did not intend to write TT-76 which was, in fact, built by KL Labs.
In many installations the TT-76 was the next door partner to the TT-4.

So Tom, don't leave us in suspense - who did build the TT-76 ???

Most of the TT-76s that I have seen say "Kleinschmidt" on them, but we
do
have one at the AWA Museum that lists "Boehme" as the manufacturer.
As I
remember, most (if not all) of the "Kleinschmidt" machines had motors
made
by "Boehme". Were they the mystery manufacturer of all the TT-76s?
