[GreenKeys] What kind of metal ?

I started cleaning up the xmitter distributor on the model 19. The parts mounting brackets all look like tarnished brass along with some corroded areas here and there. . When I buff them on the buffer they turn silver in color. Almost like polished stainless steel. I know it isn't Stainless steel but plain steel. Why though does it get a tarnished brass color ? I have never seen polished steel do that before.
