Hi

I'm sure different coil setups behave different ways. You need to let  
each set of  magnets "fly" up to a couple hundred volts above the  
loop voltage in order to keep things working well. If you like to put  
things like a punch in series with your printer voltages can get  
pretty high pretty fast. These days you can get switching devices  
that will handle a lot of voltage. They are fairly cheap so there's  
not a lot of reason not to allow the magnets to fly fairly high.
