As I understand it, RTTY Art is alive and well, but not widely practiced or
shared.

I can understand that. I believe that many originators of RTTY art spent
long, presumably happy, hours creating the original tapes.

Do not lose the faith.
I have what turns out to be a modest collection of RTTY tapes from the
estate of W4UBE. I have about 200 tapes total. I understand that at least
one member of the list has a couple thousand tapes.
I intend to send at least some of my tapes once I have my RTTY station set
up. I have a commercial duty transmitter (TMC GPT-750) and I expect it to
not melt or fade sending even the longest tapes I have. I'm new to RTTY,
and I expect to work out operating procedures and frequencies that don't
bother folks who want to talk. I'm sure I can find a frequency and time to
start a 30minute tape that will be agreeable to all.
On another front, there is a computer program that will record our graphic
tapes in digits, complete without linefeeds to permit overstrikes. An
accompanying library of files also exists. Is this on RTTY.COM? Yes, See:
http://www.rtty.com
and
http://www.rtty.com/gallery/gallery.htm
Bill Blyth3way, K7TTY, has created the program to read the graphics files,
and 137 files are available to date. I expect to add any I have that are
not yet included.
The way I see it, we can look forward to a number of things:
- sharing RTTY art over the air, as originally intended
- Having a growing library of recorded files available to play and archive
- possibly new art will be created, perhaps with scanning and shade
transformation techniques to remove the tedious and some what skilled
practice of hand keying every character
I'm frustrated that my station is not yet in operation, but it will be
eventually, and I plan to play a number of tapes from my new location in
our little valley in rural Virginia.
Note: I'm still looking for a TMC terminal unit of any sort to complete an
all-TMC, RTTY station.
