Hi folks:
So sad to hear of John's passing. Apparently back in February. He was a
genuinely nice fellow. Here are a couple of snippets from past greenkeys
posts:
(model 40 discussion)
"We replaced a lot of IBM I/O stuff with the model 40 gear in the early/mid
'seventies. All this stuff was hardwired to vast array of IBM mainframes which
had "terminals" all over the state. This was my introduction to IBM's
EBCDIC (sp?) which back then I could not only spell, but actually knew what
the letters stood for, and what it did! :-)
The end of the Selectric (sorry, guys!) and the
model 40 eras brought us newer and cheaper and
poorer keyboards. And after a number of years spent
sitting in front of the model 40 terminal/display unit,
I remember vividly the first time I ever saw an ADM-3A
"terminal" and thought "What a piece of crap THIS
thing is!". And now look around at what we use.
Sigh... John"
(discussion of why ads for new "colored telephones" caused a
political-correctness marketing revamp at Bell Systems)
"In the regional operating Bell company in which I hung my coat at
that time, the New Politically Correct management team was making
a concerted effort to change everything they could.
One particular effort which caused endless snickers was the full scale
attempt to rename things and processes to better fit the new wave of
Political Correctness lunacy that seems to be sweeping over everything.
Imagine this if you can...about fifteen or twenty general construction
or line crew types, all at about 200 pounds each sitting around on
tail gates or tool chests in the yard or garage at which they were
headquartered, listening to this 110 pound female in a Diane Feinstein
power suit from Human Resources who was telling them that from now
on, those things in the ground are NOT to be called manholes - they are
now to be known as CABLE CHAMBERS.
Yeah, right. Check.
John
An Old Tollie"
We will miss you John.
ps: I need to update my SK page. Does anyone have a picture of John? Or
a picture of Ted Minchin, or Jay Waller, for that matter?
