An offshoot of ham RTTY activity to note is the development of the deaf
TTY (or TDD) system.
Way back when I was in high school and had recently gotten my ham
license I got interested in RTTY. I subscribed to the RTTY Journal for
a few years. One of the authors that I recall seeing on those pages was
Robert Weitbrecht, W6NRM. Later I learned that he had developed the
acoustic coupler modem ("Weitbrecht modem") used for the TTY. For
anyone interested in the history there is a book, "A Phone of Our Own".
(I haven't read it yet.)
73,
Gary
