Agreed.
These messages tend to burp up every so often. Nostalgia, a full moon,
inebriation, or the desire to relive the old times seems to prod the
flag hoisting, anthem singing and aluminum kissing.
Who we don't hear are voices of Veterans who look back on their
bomb-dropping experiences with great sadness and humility. I met one at
an airshow a few years back. He served on B-29's and we both grew
tearful as he discussed his feelings about blowing up civilians. "Why
do you participate in these shows?" I asked him. "Isn't it painful?".
"I want to remind young people what we did. I hope that in sharing my
experiences we can avoid this kind of hell in the future".
It seemed he had yet to reconcile his participation fully and probably
never will. For him, participating was one way to give something back.
This list has international reach. I joined it for my interest in
teleprinters (of all types). But it also holds my interest for another
purpose: to occasionally land the political strides it sometimes takes
soundly on its arse.
Job done. Now back to RTTY?
