I've given up with Dovetron, Hal, Frederic, et.al. to go 100% military with 
TTY.  The AN/GRC-106A  performs so flawlessly on TTY there just doesn't seem 
any reason to use the other gear with outboard modems anymore.

No more cables, figuring offset, generating tones.  Just hook a piece of zip 
cord from the MD-522 to the model 28 and it is TTY away.

The MD-522 modem is perfect for narrow shift, or wide.  It's been copying 
signals in the mud with little loss.  I'm finally getting a return on my tax 
money :>)
