In addition to what's been mentioned they were used in some 1950s-era
telemetry systems. The central station would send out an enquiry which
would be decoded in the Model 28 stunt box, and that would trigger the
measuring equipment to convert the measurement to 5-level code and
transmit it back to the central station printer.
Also were used in early computers. I have one that mounts on a 28RO
base, rather than being in a separate box with its own motor. A box
of relays attached to the computer (Burroughs 220) converted from
its character code to TTY code, and then the distributor sent the
characters to the printer. Burroughs did the same thing later with
a Model 33, using its on-board distributor to serialize the data from
the computer so the printer could print it.
