I have been reading this thread for the past few days and have resisted the
urge to comment till yesterday's post stating that learning the code to get
a ham license was akin to an INITIATION RITUAL (read hazing).

If I remember correctly, most universities here in the U.S. have all but
outlawed hazing on their campuses and the military I know looks down upon
this.

Now don't get me wrong, I believe there is still a place for Mr. Morse's
code, but I do not believe that it should be an INITIATION RITUAL to get
your license.

So lets be realistic, the FCC is going to do away with the code requirement,
just like the rest of the world, but they are not going to forbid anyone
from operating in that mode.  Those of you that still want to operate code
can go right ahead and do so, just don't force those of us that don't have a
desire to learn a 2nd language to do so.
