I have been following this thread for some time now and it is interesting to
read the different views on CW.
Having been licensed for over 50 years, I have always been a staunch
advocate of CW and would always say that if you wanted the license bad
enough you would do what ever it took to get it.
However, times change and I am the first to admit that I have not kept up
with the times by maintaining this attitude about CW.
Unlike Bob, I already knew CW (I had learned it in High School) when I went
to radio school in Norfolk in 1953, so I concentrated on learning how to
type (Underwood) and was able to get to 65 wpm typing and 35 wpm CW.
In the code practice sessions they sent E, I, S, H, 5 , 4. . . .
I spent two years on the USS Damato, DDE-871 as a radio op. On discharge, I
continued to use CW for 99% of my hamming. The other 1% was spent on 2M AM
fone.
My first time on SSB was in the early 80's when I bought a TS-440.
So, I guess it breaks down to: If you like the mode, use it. If you do not
like it don't criticize those who.
