[GreenKeys] What moves the ribbon on a Teletype 43?

Lee, This is a good description provided by "Just Bob"... my problem
getting the ribbon to advance was caused by a defective ribbon! The
loop was too long and the spring-loaded arm (at the left side of the
chassis) ran out of range and couldn't keep the ribbon tight against
the one-way rollers.
Someone on the classic computers list has actual service manuals for
the 43 but I don't have copies, sorry. The operator's manual can be
found online. I agree that the interlock (in the center of the unit
just above the keyboard) is the first thing to check. I'm away from
home now so I can't go check but I have a vague memory of connecting
various modem control pins at the connector too (CTS, DTR?)
However, regardless of mode (line or local) you should be able to hold
down the Print Test button and it should cycle through all the
printable characters continuously. If the Interrupt/Alarm is lit I'm
not sure it will print, make sure the paper is correctly installed and
the paper-out switch is closing.

----Original Message----
The ribbon is merely a continuos loop that passes by a re-inking
sponge
roller inside the cartridge. The ribbon movement occurs when the
printhead does a "return" as it has one-way rollers that pull the
ribbon
in a counter-clockwise loop, but allows the the printhead to travel
across the ribbon during left to right printing.
There is an inter-lock switch that has to be operated by the white
cover
being in place and closed, or the unit will do nothing, and I think
there was also a paper-out detector, that also will disable the
machine.
Otherwise, the "LOCAL" button/indicator when lit, should provide
local
copy from the keyboard, if the unit is functional.
I know that's not much help, but it's all I got!
Would it be possible to disclose your source for the ribbons? I've
tried every place I can think of, and have come up empty???
Best of luck!
Just Bob!

> Charles, I think you are someone with coattails I would like to hang
on to. You have a model 43. So do I, one I got on ebay and when it
arrived, the print head was "floating" around loose, doing all the
damage it could. After a couple of months, I found a source for the
ribbons which arrived yesterday. I plugged this thing in and got a
row of red lights but no indication of any desire to do anything else.
If you are past the point of worrying about getting the ribbon to
advance you are ahead of me.

is something else. I would at least like to get it in a "local loop."

I was afraid my message might be misunderstood. I have several
cartridges for my Teletype Model 43. Thanks to you all I now know
where to get more.
My problem is not the M43, but my AN/UGC-74C which uses a custom
designed ribbon cartridge which is not available anywhere. It came
with my machine but was lost in the museum moves.
Thanks to all who replied...
