[GreenKeys] Hot Line, and USSR teleprinter nomenclature, etc

Tnx much Meir,
I looked and looked at that machine, and darned if I could figure out
what it was. I feel kinda embarrassed with all the years
I spent in Naval comms, and I thought I knew every darned machine in
existance..... Even the crypto stuff was familiar and friendly
'cause that just happened to be one of my specialties ( They never let
us out to see the sunlight --hi--)......
I know UK machines, and a lot of others, but never had the chance to see
a T63-SU12 in operation, and as Navy, never
had hot line experience, although a lot of other sensitive stuff was
shoveled my way..... Many thanks for the info.... If I can
get any more info ( speed, OPM, loop volts/current) I can pass it on to
the other group (cryptocollectors [Yahoo Groups]
us ex "crippies" kinda stick together since we never learned to spell
right and all our words were five letter groups --hi--.....
besides, once one spent long periods of time locked in windowless
compartments, with thick, vault type doors, with numbing
security regs and access lists, and "shoot on sight" regulations.....
True story.....compartment where I worked was guarded by
2 US Marine types. Now, let it be known that I was friends with both
Marines, and they recognized me on sight, and we had
been on liberty many times and consumed much intoxicating liquors and
beers together, since we were all married, and that
was about as far as we went on liberty--hi--.... Well, at 0 dark 30 one
morning I was on watch in offline crypto, which is kinda
the "holy of holies" in the scheme of things........The air conditioning
in the space, normally fairly decent, was inop, and a call had
been put in for someone to investigate the cause of same.... I had
removed my shirt with my rank, and also my access ID card
clipped to the pocket thereof. I also was not wearing any cover, it
being too hot (this was on the USS America [CV/CVA-66]
during the 1970 Vietnam deployment]. My dog tags were below hanging in
my locker, as such items were forbidden on watch
lest they dangle out and short a circuit, or electrocute the wearer.........
OK, needs of nature raised their ugly head, and it became clear that I
absolutely, positively, had to visit the head right that very
second or serious embarrassment would occur..... I unlocked the vault
door, exited, locked the door behind me, and told the
2 guards my "mission" and that I would return in a minute or so. I
then proceeded to take care of the business at hand, and with
a great sigh of relief, returned thru Main Comm to the crypto
space....... Right there, the problems started. I was asked for my
ID's to compare with the "Master Access List" which is posted on the
door of every security area. I was (but shoudn't have been)
incredulous......hell, I had just left.....the 2 Marines knew me by
sight... what did they expect?? the Viet Cong or the Soviets had
replaced me with a double? in the middle of the sea?????? All the
reasoning and rapidly escalating anger was to no good, and I do
believe that the "shoot on sight" would have been performed if I had
kept up complaining....
I had to WAKE UP the Comm Officer ( one of the exceedingly short list of
"chosen few" allowed to enter the "inner sanctum" and
the "holy of holies")......and explain to one pissed off, sleepy,
cranky, Navy Commander why I woke him up at 0300. He was definitely
not a happy camper, but he did, after some cajoling (read ass kissing)
agree to put his uniform on and with his Id, verify my identity.....
He did, and the Marines all of a sudden became very friendly, after
snapping to rigid attention for the CDR. The "gotcha" grin
couldn't be supressed whatsoever......but they did launch into their
staccatto " we were doing our job, Sir, Standing Order
such and such reads etc. etc and this man didn't have the proper
identification, so we couldn't permit him to enter SIR (Rigid
attention, snappy salute, sure to please anyone,,,, meanwhile GW here is
slowly fuming and is thinking about how dark it is and
how deep the water is under the catwalks, and how much of a splash a
Marine makes falling 90 feet to the concrete hard ocean
along with various other nefarious thoughts, which he fought down, and
simply, with a sheepish grin, entered the space, put his
shirt on, and was immediately recognized by all
concerned............Later, after the Commo had left, I left the space,
and confronted
my "friends", and in my best military fashion ( I outranked both) gently
enquired as to the reason for the debacle which had just
occurred, and also made a gentle suggestion that this never occur again,
lest I lose my temper, and place them on report, with
the recommendation that they both recieve 3 days "Piss and Punk" in the
brig after Capt's mast..........OK, maybe it wasn't so
gentle........Well. turns out they had been chewed out for being lax at
security and were following orders to the "T" so all I could
do at this point was convulse in laughter, shake hands, pound them on
the back, laugh again, and say "Well Done"... I even wrote
a letter of commendation for both of them to both the Marine CO as well
as up the chain of command to the XO and CO of the ship
for carrying out their security detail with precision, panache, and
exactitude....All ended well, and other than having to endure
kidding for the next few weeks until the next funny incident replaced
this one, nothing bad happened.........
I hope you get a kick out of this funny story, and it cheers your day
up..... and if you happen to come across anymore info on
that T63-SU12 let me know. I thank you much for what you have given
me... I really appreciate the info...
73 es tnx
