I think he was talking about the readers that can read 5, 6 and 8 level tapes. 
Most of that type are parallel types, with a contact-closure output per "bit". The 
tape gates have moveable guides to accommodate the different-width
tapes. The ones I have seen were "Dataspeed" types, running
in the 600-1000wpm range.
