Gill (our esteemed moderator) forwarded to me a request from the TV
production company for a teleprinter for one of this year's lectures.
The lectures have been going since the mid-1820s, sponsored by the Royal
Institution to foster interest in science to school students. "Michael
Faraday, a former Director of the Royal Institution, initiated the first
Christmas Lecture series at a time when organised education for young
people was scarce." Of recent years they have been televised daily
between Christmas and New Year

I advised the producers to contact several people in the UK who might
have working machines for display, but was disappointed not to get any
reply.

Tonight the lecture which used a teleprinter was broadcast in the UK. I
am pleased to say that they had obtained a Creed 444 machine on loan
from Amberley working museum, which was the recipient of the bulk of the
former BT collection of telecomms artefacts and was one of my
recommendations.

Thanks, Gill,

( I took loads of pictures at Amberley earlier in the year and will get
round to posting the best on my web site eventually - some great
telegraph stuff)
