 I think it has been many years now since we had to identify with cw, as I
recall that went out a long time ago.

I used to ('70s & early '80s) hear some guys that had a feature to shift the
frequency DOWN a few cycles, say 10 or 15 for their CWID. This would keep
the receiving equipment from spacing during the ID. I always ran FSK and the
other guy had to put up with the mis-prints. 
Course today, the typical RTTY contact doesn't last longer than 10 minutes.
:) 
I never tried letters and blanks, I'm going to have to go home and
experiment a little.
