Wow! there actually was an extractor? Let's turn back the clock to 1959.
If you wanted to go beyond ten meters you were pretty much on your own!
Construction was the order of the day and for two meter people of the period
who were really serious about the band there were only two tubes with a
noise figure that was acceptable: the Western Electric 417A and 16B!
You had to get both on the gray market and no one would say how good these
"pulls" were. Remember, now, that QST was still saying that the transistor
would never replace the tube.
In order to use the 416B you had to have a "nut" with some peculiar thread
and I had a buddy, W9LEE who had a genuine Craftsman engine lathe who could
make them. If I go out in my "junk box" (also known by some as Lee's
junky shed) I can find a 2M pre-amp with a 416B. And the other day I saw
another one in a drawer! We never knew how W.E. was using them and we
certainly didn't know about an "extraction tool." Any one have a pic of
the actual application?
Lee, K9WRU
