Well, I spent some time this morning trying to get HeavyMetal working using
a USB->RS232 converter. The good news is that I finally broke down and read
the Microsoft documentation and HeavyMetal is now using the "official" Comm
technique for setting odd baud rates. We can get rid of the "allowio" hack,
which is nice. Using a standard rs-232 serial port, HeavyMetal tests out
just fine with the new technique.
The bad news, though, is that the USB->Serial port converter that I bought
does not seem to handle some going down to 45 baud. The one is have is a
Keyspan USA-19HS. If anyone on the list has a different brand or model
converter, I'd appreciate it if you could take a few minutes and try the new
version of HeavyMetal (1.27) with it and report whether it works or not.
I'll be emailing Keyspan's tech support to see what they have to say. Their
documentation claims to be able to use arbitrary baud rates.
Anyway, the new version is at:

Thanks much,
