Hey Guys;
First - Bill: I did e-mail with you, prolly last year,
regarding setting the serial port speed of the UAR/T
and you referred me to the SETSERIAL utility and STTY
speed.
Well, it works GREAT! I have my RTTY program running on
my laptop and it sets the speeds fine. Thanx for the help.
P.S. - I retired from HP last October during the EER.

You might consider picking up a used laptop, of your liking,
on eBay and dedicating it to your RTTY application.
You can get some of the older models REALLY CHEAP!
I have several Toshiba T4850CTs, which only run at 40Mhz,
have 8Mb of memory, and a 256Mb disk - but with an old
version of Linux they rock!
Not bad for a $5.oo computer. That's right: I paid $5.oo for them
(each). One of them just sits in the den, on my network, and runs
the XDALICLOCK utility. The numbers "morph", fading from a 1 into
a 2, into a 3, into a 4, etc. Great conversation piece!
The other is my "Morse Code BIG BEN". It sends out the time in
Morse Code, every 15 minutes. What's neat about that is that I
don't have to open my eyes to check the time when I'm lying in
bed at night.
It also "broadcasts" things like "you have e-mail", "things to do
list", "appointments", "temperature". It's neat (nerdy?) to wake up
to an alarm clock that gives you the day's agenda in "the code".
Visitor: What was that noise?
Me: Oh, - just the computer. [bate the hook, cast out the line]
V: Why did it do that? What's wrong with it?
M: Nothing is WRONG with it - It was just telling me that
"Star Trek: The Next Generation" is on in 5 minutes... You
wanna watch it, or should I tape it for later?
V: ??????? Ummm... Ahhh... Huhhh...
M: Oh - it also said that "The beer should be cold now".
[reel in the catch].
There is something surreal in having what was orginally
a $5,000.oo computer that now sells for $5.oo.
I have a collection of HP 4150s (my favorite) that I picked up for
anywhere between $49.oo (right place at the right time) and $150.oo
(so nice with so many accessories that it was worth it).
It's easy to justify having one (several?) laptop(s) dedicated to
a specific application when they're that inexpensive.
If you DO decide to pick one up, make sure that:
o it has a hard disk.
o it has a power adapter.
o it has the O/S installed - or that you have one to install.
If it is missing any of the above, your "great deal" can be
blown right out of the water when you have to buy a power supply
or hard disk (plus the enclosure!).
