Hold hard there, buddy! The telephone may have been patented in the US, 
but by an ex-patriot Scot. Lots of other people in several countries 
invented telephones, but Bell beat everyone to the patent office and 
then spent much energy in beating them in lawsuits to protect his 
patent. Admittedly the internet grew out of a US invention, but the 
Worldwide Web concept was developed by an Englishman working in Switzerland.

which points out that ICANN doesn't actually RUN the web: it's more a 
cooperative effort by all users.
