Many thanks to Mike for the free Model 28ASR....today was the big day for
the old machine,
The cabinet arrived back from the body shop this past week with a new coat
of Bell System green paint. The cabinet had to be washed out several times
to get rid of many years grease and oil accumulation before painting. Put
all the stainless and hardware back on her weeknights.
Drenched all the mechanical parts in electronic parts cleaner until they
came up like-new clean. Got rid of all the old oil and grease. I'm using
lithium grease instead of the old type brown stuff. Every felt is
soaked/drenched in 30 weight oil....installed many new felts.
Today, down converted her to 60 WPM on the printer and the TC....haven't
found the reperferator gears for 60 WPM yet. It was a 100 WPM machine.
Took off all the sproket feed nonsense and converted the printer to standard
friction feed. This sproket feed was unusually narrow and couldn't use the
standard sproket fed paper.
I hooked up the magnets in parallel, bypassing the electrical service unit
for now, and connected the printer to a 28KSR.....to my amazement, it prints
perfectly!
Tomorrow, I search out the keyboard contacts and TD contacts. I think I'll
just sit here for a few hours, do nothing, and admire this handsome machine.
I'm finding 28's can be addictive!!
Thanks Mike and all the folks who post so much info on this list.
