My model 31 has a speed governed motor. I remember that because I tried
to use it for RTTY one time and I couldn't hear a thing for all the motor
and governor noise. Which is why, I think, the aviation model uses a tube
between the governor contacts and the motor winding. I'll have to see if
it has the heater sometime. The way mine fits into the case it is hard to
take out. I used to use it when I would travel and wanted to talk to
Bob Weitbrecht on the phone by TDD.
The Teletype Model 14 and W.U. 2-B are the same machine. However W.U.
at some point replaced the 3/8" tape handling parts with parts for
5/16" tape. I remember reading somewhere that some W.U. employee won
a big suggestion award for suggesting that they cut the width of the
tape by 1/16", and how much money that supposedly saved the company
over the course of a year. So if you have a 2-B it is likely to need
5/16" tape and if you have a non-W.U. Model 14 it probably needs 3/8"
tape.
I remember looking at a Teletype product line catalog around 1957 -
wish I still had it - and at that time they had the 28KSR and RO, and
the Model 19, and the 31, and the 14 reperforator, and I guess you
could still get a 15 or 14 printer if you wanted it. The 28 ASR and
the whole 28 line of tape equipment didn't hit the market until a year
or two later.
