If you RIGHT click on the start button , it brings up a short menu;  the
seconnd selection is Explorer.

Not when I do it, it doesn't.

Another tip I found in a magazine is that pressing the
Windows key plus E brings up a two-pane instance of Explorer.

Windows plus M minimises all currently open windows.
