The kind of printer you are talking about, where the type bars come up
like those on an old adding machine, was used in some IBM accounting
machine. I don't remember the number, but it came before the 407,
which used wheels for printing. The 407 Accounting Machine could
print as I recall 150 lines per minute. Its printing mechanism was
also used in the IBM 704/709/7090 family of computers. At least for
the 7090 it was considered so dreadful that it was never used for
much; instead each 7090 installation had one or more 1041 computers
with the very fast 1403 chain printers and did tape-to-printer and
card-to-tape operations for the bigger machine. Then the same printer
was recycled again for the 1130 minicomputer. If you looked inside
the cabinet of the 113x printer you would see things that looked like
an old 407 accounting machine.
