Hi

A very reasonable thing to do is to mount a fixed resistor in the 1.5  
to 2K ohm range inside the cabinet of your "main" printer. It will  
warm up the cabinet nicely and keep all the oil and grease from  
catching cold. It will also drive out a little bit of moisture which  
is probably a good thing.

Another way to go is to put a solid state constant current limiter in  
place of the rheostat. You still have exactly the same amount of  
power dissipation, but you do away with the need for adjustment as  
you add and subtract stuff from the loop. More or less you put a  
transistor, Zener diode, and two resistors in place of the rheostat.  
You can also get more exotic if you want to ...
