JOHN SHEETZ, 80, BELL LABS ENGINEER, HAM RADIO OPERATOR, WWII VETERAN 

A memorial service for John Sheetz, 80, of New Providence; will be held at 
2:30 p.m, Sunday Jan. 30, at St. Andrew's Episcopal Church, 419 South St., 
New Providence(908)464-4875.(Note:St. Andrew's is located adjacent to the 
Sheetz house, on South St.). 

Mr. Sheetz, who died Monday, January 17, in Runnells Specialized Hospital 
of Union County, Berkeley Heights; was an engineer with Lucent Technologies 
Bell Labs(AT&T Bell Labs during his employment) in Murray Hill, NJ; 
for many years before retiring in 1984. While there, he played a key 
role in the design, construction and operation of exhibits for displays 
at the Smithsonian Institution, the Morris Museum and the 1984 Olympic 
Games in Los Angeles. 

Earlier, Mr. Sheetz worked for the Ohio Bell Telephone Co. and also 
taught science labs to students at the William Woodruff Elementary 
School in Berkeley Heights. 

In 1949, he earned a degree in electrical engineering from Purdue 
University; West Lafayette, Indiana. 

Mr. Sheetz was an Army veteran of World War II. 

He was a ham radio operator with the call letters K2AGI. A 39-year 
member of the New Providence Amateur Radio Club; he served as club 
treasurer and edited the club newsletter Mountain Spark Gaps. He was 
also a life member of the American Radio Relay League and a member and 
former treasurer of the Amateur Computer Group of New Jersey. 

Born in Willoughby, Ohio, he lived in Solon, Ohio, before moving to New 
Providence. 

Surviving are Coby M., his wife of 56 years; a son, Fred; daughters, 
Linda Shipman and Betty Sheetz-Rohrbacher; a sister, Lucille Exton, and 
four grandchildren.
