32K, tops, meaning they'll always fit inside the minimum 
filesystem blocksize that would be taken up...  and of course,
those bulky X..X. files will compress well.  Uh oh.  We'd need
agreement on which chars are holes and which are spaces.
X and O, 1 and 0, 0 and 1, X and 0, x and ., etc.  :-)
