ok, here's my nutty crazy idea. 

Take the tapes and run them thru an FSK program to generate an audio (mp3?) file with any shift you want (170, 425, 850). Then the rtty art java program could decode the tones (or use a regular rtty decoder program). That way, we can also play the file out the audio port of our pc's and connect a TU to actually print the art out of the teletype machine! We will never have to worry about big or little endian type stuff and as long as the shift is in the file name we can always decode it 

Just a crazy thought.
