My opinion, (based only on oiling and adjusting one TT-4), is that it 
depends on you, not the machine.  As I understand it, the military machines 
are the same as the civilian ones except for variations in associated 
equipment, wiring hookups, cases and other minor things.

I just re-read Byron Kretzman's book and he mentions that these machines in 
amateur use will last a very long time, *if* they are oiled and adjusted 
from time to time.

So if you are looking for a machine and are trying to decide which one to 
look for, get whatever you can. (Then, of course, get another 
one!)  Hamshacks with teletype machines are a bit like households with 
cats. If another one comes by needing a home it just moves in.
