GM George,

I KNOW this is off topic, but I keep going to RTTY.COM, and trying to
get on the registry. I get in OK, but when I go to submit my information
to be added to the list, the emails to "rtty at rtty.com" bounce for no
apparent reason. I think there is something wrong with the CGI script,
for the form fills out ok, generates a "sendmail" command, creates said
email message, but doesn't automatically send it out. I therefore send
it manually, and it comes back as "address unknown, or some such other
error.
Can you help me with this? I don't want to take up reflector bandwidth
with a laundry list of stats and equipment, etc....
Tnx for a great site...

On another topic, I sure wish I could help with the museum end here, but
even with all the work we have done as the USS America Museum
Foundation, it sure looks like we lost our last appeal, and she is going
to be towed out and ignominiously sunk. What makes this even more
personally unbearable, is that NAVSEA wouldn't let me, as a
Preservation Officer for the Museum Foundation, back aboard to remove
"artifacts" for "preservation" Said "artifacts" included no less than
4 M-28ASR's full up, with underdome reperfs, full gearshifts, and
external relay units, as well as TEMPEST ;line filters. Now, someone
had tried to "demil" them with a hammer, but only succeeded in breaking
a couple of keys. I couldn't have moved the cases, but the "innards"
would have been wonderful to obtain. Heck, they still had paper and
tape in them, both in the perfs and reperfs.

I visited her about a year and a half ago, and we were assured that we
would be able to gain access, but the powers that be reneged on the
deal, so there goes more items Greenkey into the briny deep. On
another note, when we were in MainComm and Radio Central, someone had
committed unpardonable sins... they had DESTROYED, by use of a fire axe,
2 R-1051's
4 AN/URA-17;s several UCC-8 MUX units, more patch panels than I could
count, removed all the connectors, hacked up the armored cable, and
systematically destroyed a bunch (I didn't count) of the 24 channel
audio switch panels, by busting the knobs off with the switch shafts at
the panel, then punched holes in the panel.. All the telephones were
smashed, all the VHF/UHF gear was similarly smashed. There was NO HF
xmtrs whatsoever ( that was my GQ station, supervising the xmtr rooms)
and the URC-32's, Radio II had a 28 ASR for an orderwire, or a
standalone unit, which could be used to key the URC-32's locally as well
as a CW op position with a key and mill, , 2 R-1051's and 2 URA
17's.NONE of that equipment was present when we visited the ship. it was
pure luck I stumbled upon the 28's in what remained of CIC. nor, LF/MF
as she was fitted during my time aboard from 69-71. Of course, no CW
facilitiy was present, since the Gov't killed that in '96. All the 1MC
speakers were similarly destroyed with the pick end of said fire axe,
and the armored cable was cut 6 inches away from the case. All the
spaces I went thru were the same story with the patch panels and switch
panels, all busted apart.. they even busted the telephones.....

All in all, it would have been a nice weekend's work to get as much of
the stuff as one could, there would have been NO way to get the
cabinets, as the aircraft elevators were inoperative, the elevator from
the hangar deck to the Avionics shop was inop as they had removed the
cables, and one couldn't get outside the ship from the 03 level anyway,
as they had removed the catwalks, so the WT dsoors there opened over a
drop to the water. I sure as heck couldnt lift a '28, with my 8 spinal
surgeries, and held together with plates, hip bone chunks and screws,
but could have sure as heck gotten all the goodies from inside the
units, as well as the covers, and whatever else I could unbolt/unscrew,
and carry down to the hangar deck. Maybe there was even more
I never got back aft to Radio 4 which used to be both Emergency radio
and the Ham Shack, all full up Collins, rcvr, xmir, KW amp, and a KWM2
for a backup..... someone told me at a later date they thought the stuff
was still there, but busted up...

Well enough rant, I guess it's just too darn early, and I keep thinking
about those gearshifts and the underdome reperfs.... I have the 28ASR
(in WU livery),no underdome reperf, though, have a standalone 28 typing
reperf (TT-253A/UG) set for 100 WPM no gearshift, a M15 typing reperf, a
Mite (60 speed, missing 75 and 100 drive gears), the parts to assemble
about 75 percent of the underdome reperf on the 28, but lack a TYPING
perforator (mine's nontyping). as well as a LOAD of gears, parts, etc,
including several 28 reperfs, both chad and chadless, only needing
cleaning and lubing. I have a complete set of M28 manuals, a complete
set of Mite manuals ( I am trying, laboriously, to scan all 4 volumes
into a disk so I can put them up on the website, or possibly send them
to rtty.com. in .pdf form. I also have several sets of tools, and a
full up Stelma distortion generator and test set... these were going to
go on the America, if we had got her as a museum ship, but now, they
stay in the shack, --hi--

Anyhow, what's there is gonna be gone forever, if you go to our website
(see my signature at the bottom of the page) you will see the status,
take a look around and sign our guestbook. We fought the good fight,
but lost, so, like NADCOMM, we don't have anywhere to put our stuff
--hi-- my basement is FULL, and the XYL is making rather ominous noises...
