I'm enjoying this thread, as with most, but this comment
really struck me!

As so much of the activity is now computer generated,
I wonder why we don't hear ASCII transmissions.

Anything that can send BAUDOT can send ASCII (AFA computers
go), and since most (OK - MANY) of the appliance operators
using computers have never seen a Teletype machine, or have
any idea what 5-level code is I would expect to see 8-level.

Unless, of course, the plug & play generation didn't bother
to RTFM and see that when they point & click "RTTY" that
they can make it do something other than ITA#2...
