[GreenKeys] When The World Was Young

GreenKeyers - - -

I'll say the following, then shut up for a few weeks...

The extended stop bit was implimented because, back in them greasy,
smelly days, the U.S. power grid was not a locked-in,
you-can-count-on-it source of power guaranteed accurate within three
milli-radians of a rats ass. I believe some parts of New York had both
25-cycle power, as well as Edison's DC distribution system.

Additionally, when you consider the military during WWII would be
running on field generators which could be anywhere in the spectrum
because some people were away dodging mortar rounds and bullets as
opposed to maintaing vibrating reed accuracy of power to their combat
communications gear, (which for the most part were running on DC
governed motors set up with tuning forks that were not cross-referenced
to WWV), the extended stop bit was better than a poke in the eye with a
sharp stick.

I was not a radioman, but even the crypto systems we had on the
submarine could be heard to have a re-synchronizing pause because all of
them clocks in all of them KWR-37s collectively needed a brief period of
time to catch up with the drummer that the gods at the keying sources
were dancing to.

More cam sleeve wear was caused by lack of oil than receiving LTRS
charactrs due to diddle.

The thing I am most impressed with is the caliber of the people that
haunt GreenKeys. We have a lot of fabulous minds lurking out there. And
the best thing is the fact we SHARE the contents of those minds.

I'm now gonna take my mind and go find some news for the people. I will
be gone all weekend, but I'll try and get a nice large news loop going
between tonight and tomorrow morning so that "ITTY CENTRAL" will not be
too boring.

I do believe that there is a means whereby we can get interactive using
the telnet capabilities of the internet.

The most people who have ever tapped into "ITTY CENTRAL" at one time has
been ten. I will beat on poor Bill Bytheways's head and see if we can
come up with a telnet scheme that will work and dispense the info over
ITTY for those who want to print using the mechanicals. And I do not
disparage the mechanicals, I have store rooms full of them.

The one problem with ITTY is the latency inherent in the server, as well
as some of the MP3 players.

When I shutdown the set-up here, the signal continues to rattle on for
sometimes as much as three minutes. That is a lot of latency!!

Off to the news desk...

73,

George - W7TTY
