Hello Jerry & crew,
I'm not a painter by any means. However, my first association with Krinkle paint came in the early 60's when I was stationed with SAC at Joplin Bomb Plot, which was a SAC Radar Bomb Scoring Site located in the far Southwest corner of Missouri in the old mining town of ORONOGO. As a Ground Radio Repairman I was ordered to strip a communication console and repaint it a grey krinkle. It took me three tries to get the finished product accepted by my superiors. Two conditions are a must for a proper krinkle finsish. 1. You must have a KRINKLE type of paint. 2. The temperature of all surfaces must be pretty warm and uniform. I'm taking it that the surface has been properly prepared before hand. On our console I stripped the aluminum console bare, sanded where needed, and applied a good coat of zinc-chromate. After drying, I sanded with a very fine wet/dry paper 400 grit or better. Then I applied one more coat of primer and repeated the rubout. It you don't have a heated paint room, then it should be down under some other type of controlled enviornment. The only choice I had was the outdoors in the summer on a hot day where I let the console absorb the heat for several hours before applying paint. Someone out there must be a professional at this, and surely can add most precise information. Particularily, the ideal temperature range prior to painting. This paint is also known in some circles as "WRINKLE" paint.
