Back in the day, AUTODIN had a more strategic use.  ARPANET took over  a lot 
of those 'special' duties for the military while AUTODIN continued with  the 
more administrative functions.
 
If you want to know what pressure is like, have a General standing  next to 
you when a part of the network is down -- waiting for the network to be  
restored (any minute now, sir!!!) so that his base can resume launching  aircraft.
