I don't remember now where I read it, but someone mentioned fluorescent
copy lights on a Model 28 and I was going to comment. So far as I know,
there were three versions of copylights on Model 28 sets: fluorescent,
6V incandescent, and 60 volt incandescent. This last used two bulbs
in series across the 120 volt line, and was good if the mains power
supply was DC. For AC operation, I think fluorescents were original
on Model 28s as a very modern way of lighting, but were dropped in favor
of incandescent. I don't know the reason, but can make some guesses.
Some Model 28 equipment was used with motor control, so the motors went
on and off frequently. Fluorescent lights don't hold up well with
frequent on and off cycles, and then the small ones take some time to
turn on. Another reason is that there is the need for other light bulbs
in the machine, such as the end-of-line light and sometimes busy line and
break lights. These are conveniently operated off a 6 volt transformer
if you have one, and if you have 6 volt copylights you already have a
transformer for them.
