Yes Tom, there is a secret. Here it is:
(Be careful though, or you will slip and fall and kill yourself like
Dr. Atkins!)
Find a remote location that is clean.
Roll out the ribbon to about 1/4 of its full length.
Spray the ribbon with WD-40.
Wind up the oiled ribbon and spray the next 1/4 length.
Keep doing this until the whole ribbon is oiled.
Wrap the ribbon it a paper towel and put it in a baggie.
Let the ribbon sit overnight before using it.
Keep the extras in paper towels and baggies until you need them
P.S. The best ribbons are made out of cotton. Second choice is Rayon.
Nylon ribbons do not work well for Teletype use.
