Maybe a pooled project is in order -- buy a decent manual set,
and PAY SOMEONE to scan them. Kinko's will do it for a fee, not
unreasonable, and give you a CDROM full of TIFF images. Since
the 33 manuals are 3-ring bound the manual isn't even hurt.
What I've done with similar things is to make an HTML index of
the chapters/main sections, or make pages of thumbnails. I have
scripts that make the thumbnails.
