David,
Back in the 1970's, mechanical teletype machines were connected to terminal
units (TU's) that provided much the same function as a PK-232 TNC, except
that it supplied the 60ma current loop for the machines and provided
autostart power on/off for the motors. The autostart also quieted the
machines when there was no signal.
The concept of an autostart net is that you don't have to be there 100% of
the time, just leave your equipment on, and the message is printed out on
paper (for the mechanical machines) or saved to disk for software driven
application. I may send you a message and not receive a reply from you for
hours. It is really the lazy-man's approach to QSO's, where we can continue
a conversation, still watch our favorite TV program, or do dishes.
Check out http://www.rtty.com for more information on the TU's of the day
and their design. You can participate with a transceiver, computer and
sound card with the right software.

Subject: 30 Mtr Autostart RTTY
Hi Bill - I am fairly new to RTTY and quite new to 30 mtrs - I copied the
RTTY bulletin Sunday and would like to find out more about the autostart
function that you mentioned in the bulletin - Could you direct me to a
writeup on the web that would explain it's function/use so that I might be
able to become active on 30 mtr RTTY? - I cannot find anyone to talk to -
Hi - Thanks and 73 - Dave, W3OQ
