ZCZC,
Gang,
I'm attempting to help Eugene get his "black box ticker" working. It is the
same one in the Wayne Green TAB Books RTTY Handbook designated
as a Model 401. My biggest challenge is to figure out what actual
speed (baud rate) the 6-level machine runs at. When running open, the machine
"sounds" like it's around 75 wpm speed, but that might be misleading.
The manual copy that Eugene has doesn't address circuit speed, but it does
describe the 50ma. polar selector magnet setup.
Any help or pointers would be appreciated. I do have a couple of Fox
Boxes that send 6-level and I can select any bit rate.
I have also become the proud owner of a 6-level non-typing reperf, similar to the old "iron horse" reperf that was associated with the Model 19 (it comes in a
rounded-top black case...sometimes on wheels; my unit is on a table). I also
need to figure out what speed it runs at.
TNX,
Jack WA2HWJ

Hi Don. Boy! What a memory! That had to have been several years ago! I do have a manual from you for the black box ticker. The manual itself does not seem to show any designation for a teletype model number. Also there seems to be references in to a model "401" in some rtty handbook and now you have made mention of a model "400" I wonder what the difference is? I do know the following, however:
1. There was a model of this type of ticker that did not have an ink roller and ink roller box as mine does. As I understand it, once per day someone would come around and ink up the typewheel itself. Mine (and many others I have seen) have a box next to the paper roll where ink rollers should live.
2. There is my version (with ink roller box)
3. There is a later version that had a modification whereby the ticker could be configured to not print certain data. This was called the "bid-ask deleting ticker" in which something in the data stream would trigger some set up such that the information following would not be printed. I have read an article about this that it was primarily used for newspapers and places that only needed "last sale" information for creating the stock tables in newspapers. The brokerage houses would of course, want to print the bids and asks.
So there are potentially 3 models of this ticker. I wonder if the 400 is sans ink roller, 401 is with ink roller (and I wonder about the bid ask deleting?). Stock ticker collectors know these by Western Union model numbers, ie 5A. Pierre: Any info on the model numbers for these three styles?
Thanks again! This seems to be a segment of the teletype product line that is not discussed much or seen much. I do believe there were tons of these black boxes in service, but I guess with their limited applicability to hams I guess the greenkeys list doesn't collect these models of ttys.
