Hi Web,
These are well known scams and do not come from Citibank, AOL, or whomever
else they purport to be from. No responsible creditor would ever use the
web to verify anything. If you look at the page source, you will find the
actual links look nothing like what was displayed and point to bogus pages
set up to capture the credit card information of anyone gullible enough to
actually believe the message. Once they have your information, they can
access your account and do pretty much whatever they like, including spend
all of your money or steal your identity.
Reporting them does no good either, as they all have faked addresses and
have been posted through proxy email servers or from hijacked MS-Windows
computers.
Simply throw them in the trash. If you get enough that look alike, you
might even set up a filter rule to automatically delete them.
